History
ALCYON
Built in 2013, she was commissioned by Edith and Marc Frillet from Marseille, who wished to recreate the Houari Marseillais owned by their great-great-grandfather in 1871.
This type of vessel is characterized by an impressive Portuguese-style gaff rig. The 9.38 meters of the hull are minimal compared to the overall length—21 meters—from the tip of the bowsprit to the end of the boom’s outhaul.
Alcyon features red cedar planking, an oak and mahogany frame, and a varnished wooden deck.
She has taken part in the gatherings of Imperia, Monte Carlo, Marseille, Porquerolles, La Ciotat, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez, racing in the class… “Vintage aurici”

“Alcyon 1871 is the first true reproduction of the famous Houari cruising/racing yachts which, starting in 1855, dominated Mediterranean regattas for more than 30 years.” These boats were true pioneers, with a sail area more than twice that of any other racing yacht of the same size, which made the choice of sailmaker absolutely crucial. For example, the enormous wooden yard—over 10 meters long—must bend in a specific way, and the sail has to follow that movement.
When we were racing on Oriole, we first heard about Zaoli sails and about Beppe’s passion for classic regattas; starting to work with him was a natural consequence. In the past four years, he has contributed—both professionally and in a friendly, collaborative way—to the design and testing of six sails and a ballonnier, each of which performed well from the very start, despite the highly complex requirements and the absence of any previous examples to draw from.
