Eleven 470 teams from Argentina, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, the Netherlands and Switzerland wrapped up a week long training camp in Italy in partnership with Zaoli Sails on Sunday 17 May.
Marina degli Aregai on Italy’s north-east coast, home of Zaoli Sails, played host to the training camp, which focused on testing new sails, boat set-up and numerous training races.
Sails are the power house of a 470 and optimizing their performance is critical to improve the speed of the boat. The Zaoli training camps are proven to help teams advance their performance alongside each other, through boat on boat tuning, meticulous boat preparation and set-up, improving understanding of the parameter of each sail and execution of perfect teamwork, to ultimately optimize boat speed.
Joining the sailors were renowned coaches Bertrand Dumortier of France and two-time Olympic medallist Kevin Burnham of the USA.
The diverse weather conditions across the week enabled teams to test a wide range of boat set-ups, which could then be benchmarked through back to back races. During the lighter and shifty breeze, teams focused more on tactics, whilst in the stronger breeze it was all about driving the boat fast.
“I would like to thank all the sailors and coaches for coming,” commented Andrea Mannini of Zaoli Sails. “We all benefited from a fantastic cooperation and Zaoli received a lot of feedback. Running training camps and working hand in hand with our 470 teams is the best way to design and produce even faster sails.”
Reflecting on the unique opportunity such training provides, Mannini added, “I think we are doing something new and different for the 470 sailors. By working together, we can share information between different countries and teams can improve their knowledge. This is a fundamental philosophy of the Zaoli Sails team.”
“I want sailors to what we are doing here, and that if you use Zaoli you can join us,“ said Mannini, in explaining that the training camps are open to all sailors who use Zaoli Sails. “This is a great service. We are doing our best to support the best sailors. The training is also a great opportunity for the junior teams to learn alongside the more experienced teams, which is vital as they make the transition to senior fleet competition.”
The next event featuring the Team Zaoli sailors is Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik, the Netherlands from 26-30 May 2015.
